First Aid:

 

There are a few basic steps you should take when you first come upon the scene of an emergency.

Basic Steps:

  • Check the Scene (Water, debris, alcohol)

 

  • Check the Victim

You are checking for level of consciousness, breathing, pulse, bleeding, skin color, injuries, any pain the victim is complaining of and so forth.

 

  • Call Park’s Base and for EMT and state location and emergency.

 

4. Care of Victim

A. Choking - if the victim is unable to speak, cough, or breathe

  • Stand behind the victim
  • Place your fist just above the navel.
  • Give quick upward thrust (also known as the Heimlich Maneuver.)

B. Bleeding

  • Use gloves that are located in first aid boxes.)
  • Apply pressure directly over the wound
  • Raise the injured area (if there is no broken bones).
  • Apply a pressure bandage directly over the wound

 

C. Back, Neck or Spinal Injury

  • Do not move potentially spine-injured victims unless it is absolutely necessary.
  • Call for EMT to bring backboard, immobilizer, etc.

 

D. Burns

  • Stop the burning (put out flames or remove source)
  • Cool the burn - use large amounts of cool water
  • Cover the burn - cover with dry, clean dressings

 

E. Fracture, Sprains, or Dislocations

  • Keep the injured part from moving
  • Apply ice to injury area (if applicable)

 

F. Seizure

  • Do not hold or restrain the victim
  • Remove any objects that may cause injury
  • Try to cushion victim’s head

 

G. Medical Emergency- try to calm the victim until help arrives.

 

H. Poisoning

  • Try to obtain what was taken.
  • Try to obtain the patient age and weight.
  • Call Poison Control at 542 - 2323.

 

I. Diabetic Emergency

  • Give sweet food or drink (not diet, diabetic or sugar-free drinks) every 15 minutes until victim recovers or medical aid arrives.
  • Try to obtain the patient age and weight.
  • Call for Senior to call EMT.

 

J. Heat Stroke

  • Move the person to a cool place i.e. under an umbrella.
  • Place the feet higher than the head.
  • Either wrap the person in a cold, wet sheet, sponge the person with towels or sheets that are soaked in cold water; or spray the person with cool water.
  • Put ice packs or cold compresses on the neck, under the armpits.
  • Try to obtain the patient age and weight.
  • Call for Senior to call EMT.

 

K. Heat Exhaustion

  • Move to a cool place indoors or in the shade.
  • Loosen clothing.
  • Take fluids such as cool or cold water. If available, add 1/2 teaspoon of salt to 1 quart of water and sip it, or drink sport drinks such as Gatorade, All Sport, or PowerAde.
  • Have salty foods such as saltine crackers, if tolerated.
  • Lie down in a cool, breezy place.
  • Try to obtain the patient age and weight.
  • Call for Senior to call EMT.
